Shelves and cupboards for a long room

Description:
This long room had areas for both dining and relaxing, and the client wanted the units in the 4 alcoves to reflect this.
Chris designed shelving and storage which matched the clean lines and proportions of the room. The construction of the shelves allowed them to span the width of the alcoves without support from uprights. The shelf contents are illuminated by downlighters in the overshot top shelves. The push catches on the doors remove the need for handles, which would spoil the simplicity of the design.
Construction is in MDF and poplar, all shelf fronts and door edges being lipped with poplar for better wear and tear.

The Piggery Kitchen

Description:
The fairly specific brief for this kitchen was for a mixture of painted units and oak cabinets, free standing and fitted, aiming for a "contemporary rustic" feel.
The oak cabinets have solid european oak doors and front frames. The timber selection on the door panels is particularly striking. The finish is danish oil.
The larder unit is an impressive storage device featuring adjustable shelving, door shelves, bread storage drawers, pull out chopping boards, granite work surfaces and wine rack.
The work tops are a mixture of granite and maple.
Why the Piggery Kitchen? This kitchen was made for a house converted from a former piggery !

Gables record cabinet

Description:
This cabinet is another piece made with Christine Meyer-Eaglestone. Created for a collector in London the design was a true collaboration. The customer had strong views about dimension and proportion which Christine took into consideration in the design while I added some practical considerations.
The carcase is walnut and maple while the doors are marquetry decorated both inside and out, the maple elements and the doors have an applied ebony stringing that sets off the design elements. The door is overlaid on the front of the cabinet with no hinging evident when it is closed, it is held gently by a hide magnetic catch. All in all a quite unique piece of furniture.

The VM Chair

Description: This chair is based on an iconic design by the Swedish designer/maker, Vidar Malmsten, and blends Scandinavian minimalism with the grace of Chippendale It is made in ash with a beautifully smooth soap finish, and has a Danish cord seat. The construction is complex, with many compound angled joints and curved surfaces. It is completely hand-made, and the flowing lines of its curved back give very good lumbar support. The chair is available with or without arms.

Chris has made this piece in a number of different woods; the red turning drawers are in madrona burr and paduak, the white are in masur birch and steamed pear. The suede-lined drawers rotate on the central column, and are held closed by concealed rare earth magnets
The symmetrical book-matching of the veneers is pleasingly framed by the solid wood detail.
Materials: As required.
Price: c £1,800, depending on materials.
The red drawers were made for the 40th anniversary of a local exhibition, the theme being red/ruby, hence the use of red woods

Wave Kitchen

Description: This kitchen was a true collaboration. The design was a cooperation between Chris, David Wilson of WoodB and the customer. Chris had long had an idea to do an interior with this wave motif and suggested it when discussing the design, the intention being that the wave reflects the Yorkshire hills in which the kitchen is set. The customer was immediately intrigued by the idea of the wave and herself suggested the art deco style, rounded corners. The maple, oak, walnut combination makes this on of the truly unusual kitchens.

Circles and Stripes Sideboard

Description:
Chris was very pleased to have the opportunity to work on this sideboard with the contemporary marquetary artist Christine Meyer-Eaglestone. Christine originally trained in fine art and sculpture, only later discovering marquetry. All her work is hand cut, allowing her to develop a design organically using a vast selection of veneers as her palette. Christine prides herself on the precision of her work and the fact that every piece she makes is unique.
On this piece Christine created the marquetry panels and laid them onto boards. Chris then cut and mitred the panels to create the two inverted "L" shapes. The six walnut fronted drawers have oak linings with hand cut dovetails and cedar of Lebanon bottoms; a beautiful aroma of cedar wafts out when the drawers are opened.

Grid IV sideboard

Description:
This piece was made to a design by the marquetry artist Christine Meyer-Eaglestone. The case is solid maple while the doors feature Christine's striking marquetry design. The hanging of the doors was a particular challenge as the linear design on them required pin point accurate alignment. This was achieved using precision made Brusso pivot hinges.
The form and the decoration give this work a uniquely contemporary feel.

Minimalist Bedroom Suite

Description:
This bedroom suite was made for customers in North Yorkshire. They initially commissioned some bedside cabinets but these developed into a whole room scheme. The accent here is on minimalism. The vertical line of the oak grain cut by the horizontal walnut sections is quite striking. The drawer fronts on the drawer storage are mitred, so the units look like blocks stacked on top of each other.
In the wardrobe, illuminated hanging rails provide ambient light when the doors are opened. The doors close onto hidden rare earth magnets.
This scheme could be recreated in different configurations, perhaps different combinations of wood.
